Henry Makes Games

Picture Of Me

My name is Henry and I like to make games. I make games on scratch, but have switched to several different development platforms in the past. I am currently developing a game for the playdate using Lua, and a PC port is in development through the awesome Lua Love2d framework. I've been messing arround with C and C++ but my lack of experience is inhibiting my ability to do so well.

As well as my games, I write music, some of which can be found on my youtube channel. I've been working on Jazz music for Ramp Car Simulator 2 (my current project). I don't have very much experience with Jazz music, but I'm trying my best using what I know. I think the smooth Jazz songs will fit the game nicely, or rather make the game a better experience in their calming nature.

I'm not sure what I'll start working on after RCS 2, but it will definitely reuse code. I have some ideas for sure, but I want to make sure this all pans out. I've been working a lot on my music recently, and hope to make my music fit the experience I want you to have. Coming up with a story or general game is a lot different than actually making it, and there are many times when you get demotivated or can't make what you want to.

I also draw, and I sort of have an art style. I draw using sharp, thick, Jagged lines. I usually Rhotoscope real or 3d objects, but some times I'll just wing it. I don't have any art education, so I'm really just winging it and trying my best. I'm pretty happy for it for what it is, and someday hope to actually learn art in a class or something. It would be nice to be able to make any idea that I have.

Building engines for games where making everything is just super easy and I can just allign to the engine I made is fun. I'm making an engine for RCS2, and will probably make and engine or reuse that engine for any future projects. I think this is a good idea for those who want to make several projects. The game I make after RCS2 won't be similar to it (as of now), but will be able to fit nicely.

My dream is to be able to make art, music, and code for any game. I think this is a nice thing to strive for. I'm also a piano player with 9 years of classical teaching, but I quit for a while before going back in to it. Now that I am, the limits of my knowledge are really beginning to show, and I'm excited to learn more about Jazz. I would be perfectly happy being able to make Jazz music for every future project I have. Every song I make is usually made up of two trumpets, a tenor sax, drums, bass, and piano (Which is a combo I know in real life).

Coding in lua is a great experience. I would recommend any self taught coder who wants a bare-bones approach than something like godot, but not too low level like SDL, to use Love2d (or maybe something like PyGame). Coding in lua really has been the bridge to success for my projects, and things seem to be going very well as of now. If you find yourself in a similar spot to me, definitely check out Love2d!
